Just when I was about answering him, the door squeaked upon Fiifi’s entrance. Ignorant of my video call with my boyfriend, he shouted “Enowizzy, I’m back”. Before I could say anything, Owura exclaimed “Seriously? Enowizzy? Eno isn’t that your boss?!”
At that moment, I had my headphone on, so Fiifi actually had no idea I was making a call. Especially because he was packing his stuffs and getting ready for us to leave or better still show me “the surprise”.
“Owura, don’t blow this out of proportion, please let me call you when I get home”
“Eno, has your relationship with him grown so lenient that he addresses you with a pet name?”
“Owura please don’t go there”
“Eno if you cut this call you’ll see me in Accra tomorrow” At this juncture I couldn’t wait to hear more from Owura considering how apoplectic he suddenly was so I ended the call.
“Ow, you’re making a call?” asked Fiifi.
“Naa I’m done”, I replied.
“Sure?” he asked again and before I could reply, he continued “Sorry I’m late. Doc Owusu Akyiaw made me stay behind for a short discussion. He wants me to represent him at a seminar in the Western region early next month. I’ll tell you about that later. Now let’s get going” he said as he helped me up.
“I thought you had a surprise for me Fiifi, if it was a joke I won’t take it lightly. My wait has sparked a hurricane already”
Fiifi: Ei Kumasi Van Dam, chill, it’s in my car.
I helplessly giggled even though I disliked the sudden title. At least Kumasi John Cena would have been comforting. At that moment I couldn’t imagine the restlessness of someone in Patasi.
Owura had lived in Taadi almost his entire life. He only moved to Kumasi when he gained admission at KNUST to read Medicine and had been there since. He was now a medical officer at the Suntreso Hospital.
It had been 3 months I started my national service and I never ceased to mention Fiifi to him because he had become a buddy since I got to 37. Even though a resident radiologist, his ultrasound skills needed some improvement and my aid came in handy with some one or two cases daily. We shared ideas all the time especially on Thyroid and Scrotal Ultrasound Exams. Some colleagues insinuated we were dating due to how well we got along but I always got defensive. Not only because he had a wife and ‘daughter’ which he always refused to talk about, but also because I had a boyfriend I had been dating for almost a year. I met Owura during my clinical practice at Kath, when doing his second year house job, through Dr. Adusei-Dua.
As we walked towards the garage, Fiifi let an interesting skeleton out of the bag. Apparently he had refused to talk about ‘his family’ because Wendy, the ‘apple girl’ wasn’t his biological daughter neither had he a wife. An excuse Owura was always pleased with because he knew I would never flirt with a married man. She was his cousin–who had lived with them since childhood’s daughter.
“Are you kidding me?”
“Nope” he said.
“Fif! The first day we met with your rainbow dressing I thought she was your little sister until you told me she was your daughter and now she’s not? “
“But my cousin’s baby is my baby” he retorted.
I wasn’t shocked at this revelation though. Wendy did not say “daddy” and Fiifi never wore a ring.
“So you actually made me wait for almost 2 hours for this?” I asked.
“Nope Enowizzy, get into the car. The surprise is waiting”.
We put on our seatbelts, I flipped through a Gt Bank brochure that was on the seat as he drove off and I calmly awaited “the surprise”.
I might have dozed off because I have no memory of how we ended up in Tulip Inn. Upon arrival, Fiifi held my hand and led me into a conference room of about 30 people. He gave out two ticket to lady at the entrance before we entered.
On a mini platform performing was Psalm 1(aka The Christ Junkie), a popular Poet amongst Christian youths of today. At this moment, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Fiifi had actually bought tickets to a spoken word show I had been itching to attend and made so much noise about at work. Was he this caring and attentive to me? With my wowed expression, he smiled at me as we sat behind a lady with a 360 combed natural hair that almost blocked my view. Then he whispered into my ears “Surprise….I know how you wanted to be here so bad. Sorry we were a bit late though”.
Still in awe, I smiled at him and involuntarily pecked him on the left cheek.
Just before I could add a “thank you”, my phone vibrated. Was a message from Owura which read “When did this affair start?” My heart skipped a beat and I quickly looked behind.
